SEV Payday Budget Spreadsheet

Product Overview

Most budgets work by the month, but pay often arrives weekly, fortnightly, every four weeks, on the last working day or twice a month. This spreadsheet budgets by payday instead. Enter how you are paid and list your bills once, and it works out what each pay has to cover and what is left.

  • Paydays: every payday for the year ahead, in six pay patterns: weekly, fortnightly, every four weeks, monthly on a date, monthly on the last working day, and twice a month. A payday that falls at a weekend or on a bank holiday can move to the working day before or after, or stay as it is. You list your bank holidays on the Settings sheet.
  • Bills: monthly, weekly and annual bills, each placed in the pay period it falls in. A large or irregular bill can be spread evenly instead, with an equal set-aside from every pay.
  • Savings and what is left: save a fixed amount or a percentage of pay each payday, and see what is left to spend, in total and per day.
  • Spending and This Pay: log what you spend, with the date, and each line is matched to its payday. The This Pay sheet shows the current pay period: its bills in date order, and what is left now.

A worked example shows a fictional person paid £1,150.00 fortnightly. For the first pay, bills and set-asides of £340.31 and savings of £50.00 leave £759.69 to spend, or £54.26 a day; after £187.95 of spending, £571.74 is left.

Who it is for

  • People paid weekly, fortnightly, every four weeks or twice a month, for whom a monthly budget never quite fits.
  • Anyone who wants to know, on payday, what this pay has to cover before the next one.
  • People who prefer a spreadsheet to a budgeting app, with their figures kept in their own file.

Compatibility & Access
  • Open the file in Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers.
  • Start on the Start Here sheet. Then fill in Settings and Bills; Paydays and This Pay fill themselves in.
  • Type only in the shaded cells. Everything else is worked out for you.
  • The worked example uses fictional figures. Use it to see how the file works, and start your own budget in the blank file.

  • Amounts are shown as plain numbers; the currency symbol you choose on Settings appears in the headings. The worked example uses pounds (£).
